Adventure Learning: utilizing new and challenging experiences as a tool to develop teamwork and leadership skills

Our partnership with Childrens Bible Fellowship (CBF) has awarded Elevate many opportunities for outdoor learning and adventure activities. During trips to CBF, students participate in team building exercises, build upon leadership skills developed in the classroom, and bond with their Teacher Mentors and their peers. Outdoor learning has been especially important as we navigate the ever-changing pandemic protocols. CBF provides Elevate with a beautiful space for students and staff to learn, reflect, grow, and bond.

In November, Elevate students were invited to participate in Young Life’s weekend retreat at Lake Champion, a premier 370-acre year-round retreat center located in the foothills of the southern New York Catskill Mountains. Students participated in high energy fun and adventure activities which included hiking, swimming, air hockey, ping pong and board games. The weekend also provided students with the opportunity to explore their spiritual journey through guided conversations and peer support. When asked about their camp experience, students shared the following sentiments.

  • "Before camp, a lot was happening in my life, and it was overwhelming. Camp was the break that I truly needed in this moment.”

  • "My experience at camp was eye-opening mentally and emotionally. Connecting with others gave me a sense of peace and happiness. After camp I had a new mindset on college and friendships."

  • “Because we didn’t have our phones, we were able to connect with each other and rekindle friendships. I am now closer to the people I didn’t really speak to before camp.”

  • "My camp experience helped me discover what I want to do after I graduate. Not only did I get to meet new people and learn from them, but I also connected with nature."

  • "My experience at camp was eye-opening mentally and emotionally. Connecting with others gave me a sense of peace and happiness. After camp I had a new mindset on college and friendships."
