Looking Back at an Unprecedented Year

The closing of schools in March 2020 due to the pandemic has significantly impacted the lives of our students, families, and staff. This impact will likely continue through the 2020-21 school year and beyond. While no one can predict all the challenges that may arise over the coming months, our Teacher Mentors continue to lean in as a source of support for youth.

We are entering the Spring semester with virtual classes still being taught daily. While attendance has been significantly impacted, Elevate Teacher Mentors continue social-emotional check in calls with every student to build relationships in & out the classroom.

A 2020 roundup - Elevate offered students:

  • Socially distanced study and workspace, away from any distractions & challenges

  • Leadership & financial literacy sessions led by with Microsoft, Goldman Sachs & NERA Economic Consulting

  • Comprehensive college & career prep provided by a college access and higher education consultant

  • Empowerment sessions that provided  transformative principles that lead to prosperity in their professional path, wellness journey and personal relationships

  • Virtual paint event inspired by Basquait’s work and the symbolic messaging behind his crown -students expressed their creativity and affirmed their greatness

Looking Ahead - Elevate New York is thrilled to share  that some seniors in our cohort are already going through the college interview process and others are well on their way. We are also developing diverse & enriching program offerings for the remainder of the year. While youth and future generations will shoulder much of the long-term economic and social consequences of the crisis, their well-being and future continues to be our main priority.
